APPLIES TO: Windows (All versions)
Level: Beginner
Tools/Software needed: None
When you start your computer, you see the following message displayed in gray letters on a black screen:
Non-system disk or disk error
Replace and strike any key when ready
1. Open your CD drive (If you have one). Remove any CD you find there.
2. Push the button on the floppy disk drive (if you have one). Remove any floppy disk inside it. The floppy disk drive is usually in
the middle portion of the computer. It will have a green light, which blinks on and off whenever data is transferred to/from it.
The drive has an opening about the width of a playing card, and about a 1/4 inch thick.
3. Restart your computer.
WHAT CAUSES THIS PROBLEM TO OCCUR?
When your computer starts up, it needs to find Windows. Normally, Windows will be installed on the Hard drive ,
which is inside the computer. However, there are times when you need to start the computer from a floppy disk or a CD. This error is a result of leaving
a non-Windows CD or floppy in the drive at startup. Basically, the computer is trying to start Windows, but it can't find it, and doesn't
know what to do.
