0004: HOW TO POWER CYCLE A CABLE MODEM

APPLIES TO: Windows (all verisons)
Level: Beginnner
Tools/Software needed: None

PROBLEM

You have a high speed internet connection (e.g. Road Runner, Verizon DSL, etc.) and you are unable to connect to the internet.

RESOLUTION

1. Unplug the power from the cable modem (this is the box that was installed when you first got your high speed connection). Make sure all lights on the modem are off. 2. If you have a router, unplug the power from it as well.
3. Turn off your computer.
4. Plug in your modem, and ONLY THE MODEM. Wait one minute.
5. If you have a router, plug it in now. Wait one minute.
6. Turn on your computer, and you should be able to access the internet.

WHAT CAUSES THIS PROBLEM TO OCCUR?
Your computer has an address, called an IP address, which is a number that uniquely identifies it on the internet. Periodically, this number is "refreshed." If this is not done correctly, you lose internet connectivity.
